Mr Agwunobi began his surgical training in the UK in 1991. Over the next few years he worked in hospitals throughout the UK and received extensive training in all areas of general surgery. He then undertook specialist training in upper gastrointestinal and advanced laparoscopic surgical techniques, including gastric cancer and oesophageal cancer resections.

During this time Mr Agwunobi was lucky to work in some of the leading laparoscopic surgery units in the UK, as well as some additional training in France and Germany. His time within the teaching hospital at the Intestinal Failure Unit at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, regarded as an International Centre of Excellence, gave him experience in managing some of the most complex problems in gastrointestinal surgery. In 2002 Mr Agwunobi was appointed Consultant General Surgeon at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust and became the Lead Upper GI Surgeon for the Trust.

To date Mr Agwunobi has carried out over 3,500 laparoscopic surgery procedures, including complex abdominal procedures in patients who have had previous open abdominal surgery. He continually strives to improve and extend the services he delivers to patients by keeping up with new developments in his field and visiting other acclaimed units in both the UK and abroad. He had been involved in the training of junior surgeons and medical students and has acted as an examiner for The University of Manchester Medical School.
